Hockerton Housing Project

Hockerton Housing

The Hockerton Housing is Britain’s first self-sufficient environmental housing development. The five homes are some of the most energy-efficient houses in all of Europe, and the residents live with the land and have a zero carbon footprint. The entire development has been built to ensure sustainability, with residents generating their own water and doing their own recycling.

Hockerton houseThere is a large shared organic vegetable growing area on the premises for residents to grow their own vegetables. Each home will also have their own smaller garden which is for their personal use. An orchard and an apiary are also found on the Hockerton Housing Development, which have been found to be beneficial to each other. The bees’ aid in the pollination of the trees, and the fruit provides the bees with all the nectar they need. The fruit can be picked by the residents of the estate, and the bees wax is used to make candles and polish.

On the development, there is a large lake which is used for recreational purposes as well as fish farming. A nearby reservoir collects water for the residents, and septic tanks recycle waste into a purpose built reed system in the lake. Composting areas are found on site, for residents to do all of their recycling. Solar panels and wind turbines provide the Hockerton Housing development with all its energy needs.
