The Shanghai Tower

The construction of the tallest tower in China and one of the ten tallest towers in the world has begun. The Shanghai Tower will boast a height over 2070 feet and will have over 120 storeys upon completion. The unique cone-shaped tower rotates on its climb to the heights of Shanghai and ends with an open top design; part of the environmentally-friendly goal. The development of the tower will consist of nine distinct bio-climatic zones; each with its own atrium, tropical gardens, indoor air controls and panoramic views of the surrounding metropolis.

The design of the Shanghai Tower includes several green features and is expected to reduce building materials as well as energy usage. The open-topped design will use wind turbines and sunlight to create energy for the tower in a bid to reduce artificial lighting and heating. The tower will be located in a large public park in a further attempt to promote the environment and encourage residents to go green. Shanghai Tower will consist of a luxury hotel, apartment and residence block, restaurants and cafes, as well as retail space. The tower is set to be completed in 2014, with the first part of the tower scheduled to open in 2012.
